Wavetek 164 30 Mhz Sweep/Function Generator

This Wavetek 30 Mhz function-generator is a very nice instrument; with many very useful features and functions besides just sine and triangle waves.

In the first place, it's also a Sweep generator too.  You can sweep a 1000:1 range of frequency easily; with all sorts of sweep setups; including smooth, stepped, pulsed, gated, burst-sweeps, etc. etc..

It's great for RF work, like sweeping RF/IF filters.  Add a reflection-bridge, and you can even sweep HF antennas for return-loss, tuning, and swept SWR measurements!

In the second place, this 164 can also be used as a Pulse Generator; and with variable-transition times too!  I found it very useful for designing Switching Power Supplies; where I needed to choose an edge-rate for the Power-FET gate-drive that would optimize the balance between switching-losses and RFI generation (pics below).

As you can see in the pictures, this unit is in great shape....front-panel is very good...knobs are great.....no cracks or missing knob-caps....everything is straight and ship-shape.

I powered it up and it produced output; as shown in the pics.  The first pic shows it putting out a clean sine-wave at its rated 30 Mhz (scope shows the 33ns time-measurement).

And here's a nice linear Triangle-Wave at 10khz....

I also set it to Pulse mode to show you the Variable-Transition feature mentioned above.  The first pic shows a typical 25khz FET gate-drive signal with the edges set to a pretty fast rate.....the 2nd pic shows the same signal but with the edge-rate adjusted to a much longer transition.

Note:  the sweep-section controls were acting 'noisy'.....the sweep was going on and off as I was adjusting those controls.  So it would be smart to plan on spending a rainy afternoon going through the entire checkout/calibration procedure from start to finish....and cleaning each control and switch as you go along.
